1Kalp ve Damar Cerrahisi Kliniği, Adana Numune Eğitim ve Araştırma Hastanesi, Adana Four patients who were operated due to injury to the inferior vena cava were assessed retrospectively between January 2011 and August 2011 in our clinic. Two of the patients were male, two were female and mean age was 42 (15-56). The causes of inferior vena cava injuries were ia- trogenic in two cases, gunshot wounds and stap wounds in the others. Three patients underwent emergency laparotomy and one patient who had gynecologic malignancy were assessed intraoper- atively. In three patients the injury was primarly repaired and in the remaining case inferior vena cava was ligated at the infrarenal level. One patient died due to respiratory insufficiency on post- operative day 4. Primary repair should be the first choice for treatment of inferior vena cava injury but ligation of the inferior vena cava at the infrarenal level may be considered as a life-saving method when the repair process is not possible for several reasons.
