Pathophysiologically lymphedema originates from the obstruction of the subcutaneous
lymphatic flow. Congenital or acquired, it may result from a number of cause. Besides functional
loss and cosmetic deformities lymphedema also affects quality of life. The most important factor in
the prevention of lymphedema is the education of the patients and their family. Although there are
many approaches a standart treatment of lymphedema does not exist. Primary lymphedema is
mostly detected in childhood and commonly treated by conservative methods. This case report
presents our experience with microsurgical lymphaticovenous shunt creation for treatment of
chronic lymphedema. This easy and simple method could be used widely and could provide stable
improvement of chronic lymphedema in children.
