RENAL ARTERIOVENOUS FISTULA FOLLOWING NEPHRECTOMY

Ren al arte riovenous fistula following nephrectomy is a rare complicati on. Although renal biopsy is the most common cause of renal arteriovenous fistula, the formation o a fistula between the renal artery and the renal vein following nephrectomy can be seen. The use of mass ligation of the renal p edicle,especially with suture ligatures, predisposes a patient to this complication. These fistula s are typically large,producing congestiv e heart failure and other cardi ovascular manifestations.

The patient was a 40-year-old woman having tachycardia, left ventricular hypertrophy and moderate hypertension. An arteri ovenous fistul a was seen at renal angiog raphi c study (figure 1). On contrast computed tomography was seen that th e aneur ism was calcified (figu re 2). We ligated right renal artery proximal to the aorta and discharged the patient on 10th postoperative day.
