Abstract

Neointimal hyperplasia is the major factor affecting patency at the anastomosis in cardiovascular surgery. Apart from hemodynamic changes, platelet activation by suture and graft material also contribute this process. In this study, we investigated the effect of different suture materials on platelet activation invitro.

Blood samples from 10 men, were santrifuged to obtain platelet riched plasma (PRP). Every sample divided into 5 equal volumes and 4 different suture materials (silk, polypropylene, polydiaxanon, PTFE) plunged into 4 samples, except the control sample and kept there for 5 minutes. Then platelets were fixed, by sinking the grids in PRP. Under electron microscopic vision, platelet membrane morphologies were studies by shadow casting method. The statistical analyses are made by ANOVA. Control sample values are considered as base values. Spread and aggregate forms, which show irreversible activation of platelet, were found to be significantly higher in polypropylene and PTFE groups, compared with silk and polydiaxanon groups (p<0.05). In our study, polypropylene and PTFE, when compared with silk and polydiaxanon found to less activate platelets, which is considered as a stimulation for neointimal hyperplasia formation. In our point of view it is advantageous to use polypropylene and PTFE suture materials.
