İnternal Karotis Arter Katlanması ve Cerrahi Tedavisi

Atheroma or atherosclerosis at the carotid bifurcation is the cause of cerebrovascular insufficiency in most of the patients with carotid disease. Nevertheless 20% of these symptomatic patients hava an abnormal kinked or coiled internal carotid artery. Kinking of internal carotid artery is accompanied by atherosclerosis in almost 40% of these patients. Surgical treatment of the patients with abnormal kinked or coiled internal carotid arteries who had cerebrovascular insufficiency are stil! remain controversial if atherosclerosis is not present. The reason of this discussion is because !here is no sufficient data about the stroke risk of kinked or coiled internal carotid artery.

In this study, two neurological symptomatic patients with kinked internal carotid artery have been discussed. We conclude that a more aggressive surgical treatment should be applied to the symptomatic patients in this disabling condition.
