Abstract
Material and Method: Nineteen rats were divided into three groups. Rats in the control group (Group 1) were under taken laparotomy and closed after exploration of abdominal aorta. in the I/R group (Group 2), the infrarenal aorta of the rats were clamped tora period of 3 hours. After the ischemic period, aortic clamping was removed and waited tor 1 hour of reperfusion period. The rats in the ascorbic acid group (Group 3) were administered sodium ascorbic acid commencing !rom 5 days before experimental procedure. The animals were sacrificed and the histological specimens of the lungs were examined. The pathological changes in the lungs were ranged between stage O+ and 4 correlate d to the level of increasing injury.
Result: Edema, congestion and hydropic degeneration were more prominent in the specimens of group 2 and 3 as compared to the control group. The average scores were 0.6, 2.14, 1.85 in the groups 1,2,3, respectively. Group 3 was associated with lesser degrees of renal injury as compared ta the second group (p<0.05).
Conclusions: Pretreatment with ascorbic acid was beneficial in prevention of renal injury due to ischemia/reperfu sion after transient acute distal abdominal aortic occlusion
