COMPARISON OF FEMOROPOPLITEAL BYPASS OPERATIONS WITH PTFE GRAFT iN DIABETIC AND NON DIABETIC PATIENTS

Between January 1993 and June 2001, 63 patients presented with peripheral vascular disease have undergone 73 femoropopliteal bypass operations in SSK Vakıf Gureba Hospital, Department of Cardiovascular Surgery. There we­ re 25 patients with diabetes mellitus. The ages ranged from 33 to 86 (mean age was 61 in diabetics and 65 in non­ diabetics). There were 13 (% 20) female and 50 (% 80) male. At 30. day, first , second and third years follow-up, the patency of grafts in diabetics were % 13.3 (4), % 23.3 (7), % 13.3(4), % 33.3 (10), r espectively; in nondiabetics % 4.6 (2), % 16.2 (7), % 20.9 (9), % 27.9 (12) respectively. ln contrast the classical knowledge, the long term follow-up of patients presented with peripheral vascular occlusive disease revealed similar results in both diabetics and non-di­ abetics. However, the risk of complications during the short term follow-up period is higher in patients with diabetes mellitus.
