Abstract

Mesenteric Venous Thrombosis (MVT) is a catastrophic event with a high mortality. This uncommon form of visceral ischemia comprises 5% ta 15% of ali acute mesenteric ischemia cases. in spite of advances in imaging techniques, diagnosis of the MVT is difficult and delay in diagnosis remains a major problem. The majority of cases with MVT have the hemathologic disorders, such as Factor V Leiden mutation, protein C,S and AT 111 deficiency, and policitemia.

Once the diagnosis of MVT is confirmed, patient is immediatly anticoagulated with heparin and broad-spectrum antibiotics are given. lmmediate laparotomy is indicated in patients with diffuse or localized abdominal tenderness, rebound, and rigidity. Only bowel segments with overt gangren should be primarly resected. A second look laparotomy should be undergo ta reassess bowel viability in 24 ta 48 hours..
