Abstract
Methods: Sixty-seven patients who admitted to the outpatient ward of our clinic with complaints of varicose veins were included into the study. The study group consisted of 30 patients who had significant insufficiency in the VSM. Patients without insufficiency in VSM constituted the control group. Blood samples were collected from the dorsal veins of the affected extremities. Malondialdehyde, erythrocyte reduced glutathione, Vitamin C and Vitamin E were the parameters analyzed.
Results: In the study group, MDA levels were found to be significantly higher than the control group (p=0.001). GSH, vitamin C and vitamin E levels were significantly lower in the same group when compared with the control group (p=0.05, p=0.03, p=0.001).
Conclusion: In patients with significant regurgitation in VSM, there is a reduction in the anti-oxidant systems. Addition of vitamin C and E, as anti-oxidants, to the current known management for the insufficiencies of the VSM will fairly complete the missing part in medical therapy.
