Abstract
Carotid endarterectomy is an interventional strategy performed in treatment of internal carotid artery stenosis. General anesthesia, regional anesthesia and local anesthetic application with simultaneous intravenous sedation are different anesthesiological strategies employed. Recently, local anesthetic application with simultaneous cervical blockade has become popular and decreased morbidity and mortality. Various sedatic hypnotic drugs are being administered during surgery together with local anesthetic applications. Dexmedetomidine is an easily titrated sedation agent used during carotid endarterectomy with regional anesthesia and is considered appropriate due to its sympathetic activity modulatory effects. Here we report our carotid endarterectomy experience with cervical block in three patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, under dexmedetomidine sedation.
