Abstract
Objective: Raynaud's phenomenon (RP) is a disorder characterized by redness and cyanosis as a re- sult of vasospasm of the digital arteries, involving mostly the upper extremities. We conducted this study to trans- fer our clinical experience with RP in young age group. Material and Methods: 144 patients who admitted to our Neurology and Cardiovascular Surgery clinics between November 2009-December 2011 and diagnosed as RP were included to the study. The medical records of the patients were evaluated retrospectively in terms of aetiological factors, treatment modalities and response to therapy. Results: 129 (89%) of the patients were male, 15 (11%) of the patients were female. The mean age of the patients was 21,13 years. 139 (96%) of the patients were diagnosed as primary, 5 (4%) of the patients were diagnosed as secondary Raynaud Phenomenon The most com- mon etiologic factor was found to be exposure to cold. The second most common etiologic factor was smoking. The other etiologic factors were oral contraceptive use in one patient, beta-blocker use in three patients and polymyositis in one patient. 60 patients diagnosed with primary RP were administered conservative methods without medical treatment because of the mild clinical findings. The other 79 patients diagnosed with primary RP underwent medical treatment due to their clinical symptoms (nifedipine to 48 patients and the combination of nifedipine+pentoxifylline+acetyl salicylic acid to 31 patients with more severe symptoms). Conclusion: The distinction of RP as primary or secondary has a great importance because of the different treatment approaches. We think that avoidance from cold, emotional stress reduction and smoking cessation are the main treatment for RP. We suggest the medical and surgical treatment options for the patients with frequent painful episodes.
